The Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships has announced that world No. 1 and defending champion Justine Henin plans to return to Dubai with the goal of defending her title in February.
Svetlana Kuznetsova, Jelena Jankovic, Ana Ivanovic, Maria Sharapova, and Serena Williams are also scheduled to participate in the event.
With all top four-ranked women competing, the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships rivals even the Grand Slams for quality, making it unnecessary for tennis fans in the Emirates to travel to London, Paris, Melbourne or New York.
Instead, nearly all the top names in the game will be on show at the Dubai Tennis Stadium, making the event the hottest ticket in town.
“Dubai is a tournament I love so much,” said Justine Henin in the event’s press release. Henin has never lost a match in her four visits.
“It’s the first I put in my calendar after the French Open. I love to play there, I love the atmosphere and I have Belgian fans who live there so every year it’s like a big party. It’s a great feeling to go back every year.”
“We are delighted to welcome the greatest gathering of stars in the history of the tournament who will compete for US$3 million in prize money,” said Colm McLoughlin, Managing Director of tournament owners and organisers Dubai Duty Free.
Play at the Barclays Dubai Tennis Championships, which is held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, begins on February 25th 2008 with the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour tournament, and is followed by the ATP event from March 3rd to 8th.
Grandstand tickets for the award-winning event go on sale from today (Sunday, January 13th) at the Dubai Tennis Stadium box office and online at www.timeouttickets.com. For further ticket details please visit www.dubaitennischampionships.com.
