Doubles No. 1 Liezel Huber will have to wait until a future date to represent her new country in international competition.
USA Fed Cup captain Zina Garrison has not announced her official team for the opening tie against Germany, but has informed Huber that she was not named to the squad.
Huber, who is originally from South Africa, became a US citizen last summer and resides with her husband in the Houston area. Since becoming a nationalized American, she has repeatedly said how eager she is to play for the United States in Fed Cup and the Olympics.
Although the United States does not have an ample supply of candidates to summon for Fed Cup duty, Garrison is expected to bring only one doubles specialist to California later this month. That position is likely to go to Fed Cup stalwart and former doubles top player, Lisa Raymond.
The reason Garrison discourages bringing multiple doubles specialists is because if one of the two singles players is injured, Garrison wants a person comfortable enough at singles in reserve. Raymond has not played singles in almost a year, and the last time Huber participated in a singles tournament was in 2003.
According to ESPN, Huber asked Garrison to notify her in advance so that she could plan her season accordingly with doubles partner Cara Black, who is co-ranked No. 1 with Huber.
Lindsay Davenport has already been named to the squad, with Garrison still in negotiations regarding the inclusion of Venus and Serena Williams.
