Venus Williams surrendered only six games to Ana Ivanovic in their two Grand Slam matches in 2007, but today in Melbourne it was a different story as Ivanovic scored her revenge in straight sets.
Fourth seed Ana Ivanovic has advanced to the semifinals of the Australian Open after defeating Williams 7-6(3), 6-4.
Venus’ play was inconsistent and despite holding a 3-0 lead in the second set, the former world No. 1 could not deny Ivanovic a berth in her first Australian Open semifinal. Venus’ left thigh was heavily taped, but it did not appear that her movement was hampered.
The meteoric rise of tennis players from Serbia was one of the most inspiring stories in tennis during the last year and now the 2008 tennis season will begin with two Serbians in the semifinals of the first major.
Ana Ivanovic and her countrywoman Jelena Jankovic are on opposite sides of the draw, making a historic all-Serbian final a distinct possibility.
Ivanovic will play Daniela Hantuchova in the semifinals on Thursday.
