World No. 1 Justine Henin has been nominated for the 2008 Laureus World Sportswoman Award, the Laureus World Sports Academy announced on Thursday.
The Laureus World Sports Awards, which recognize sporting achievement during the period February 1, 2007 – December 31, 2007, are recognized as the premier honors on the international sporting calendar.
A glittering collection of the world’s greatest sports stars have been nominated for the 2008 Laureus World Sports Awards, following a ballot by the world’s media.
The winners, as voted by the Laureus World Sports Academy, the ultimate sports jury, made up of 43 of the greatest sportsmen and sportswomen of all time, will be unveiled during a televised Awards Ceremony staged in the Mariinsky Concert Hall in St. Petersburg, Russia on February 18. 2008.
Nominated with Henin for the Sportswoman of the Year award are athletes Yelena Isinbayeva, Carolina Kluft, Libby Lenton, Marta, and Lorena Ochoa.
“This has been a great year for sport and the Academy are going to find it extremely difficult to decide who to vote for as winners,” Laureus World Sports Academy Chairman Edwin Moses said.
“We have had some thrilling world championships this year and a host of terrific individual performances. I congratulate all the nominees and now we look forward to what should be a great Awards Ceremony.”
Laureus is a universal movement that celebrates the power of sport to bring people together as a force for good.
Laureus is composed of three core elements – the Laureus World Sports Awards, the Laureus World Sports Academy and the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation – which collectively celebrate sporting excellence and harness the power of sport to promote social change.
In 2007, two other female tennis players, Amelie Mauresmo and Serena Williams, were honored by the Academy with awards.
