World No. 1 Justine Henin plans to launch her 2008 Roland Garros title pursuit at the Qatar Telecom German Open in Berlin, tournament officials announced on Wednesday.
Defending champion and current No. 2 Ana Ivanovic has also been added to the Tier I tournament’s player field.
“The 2007 tournament was one of the best events throughout the world with
eight of the ten top ten players competing,” said Sheikh Mohamed Bin Faleh Al Thani, President of the Qatar Tennis Federation on Wednesday. “I assume that such strong entries will again take part at the 2008 Qatar Telecom German Open on May 5 to 11.”
Ivanovic defeated Svetlana Kuznetsova 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(4) in last year’s final.
Justine Henin is the most consistent clay court player since Monica Seles and will be attempting in 2008 to break the record she shares with Seles for consecutive French Open titles.
Henin, a four-time champion at Roland Garros, heads into this year’s tournament on a three-year win streak.
