Qualifier Petra Kvitova Stuns Venus Williams in Memphis Opener

The Regions Morgan Keegan Championships and the Cellular South Cup bid an early farewell to their top two seeds on Monday as Venus Williams and Tatiana Golovin crashed out of the tournament in the first round.

Qualifier Petra Kvitova played the best match of her career today in Memphis, dismissing defending champion Venus Williams in three sets 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Kvitova won her first main draw match only three weeks ago in Paris. The seventeen year-old from the Czech Republic defeated then ranked No. 30 Anabel Medina Garrigues in straight sets.

Williams had not lost in the first round of a tournament since the 2006 Australian Open.

Second seed Tatiana Golovin lost earlier today to American Bethanie Mattek. Mattek upset Golovin in two sets 6-4, 6-4.

Third seed Shahar Peer advanced into the second round with a solid 6-2, 6-1 win over Ahsha Rolle.
