The Qatar Telecom German Open announced today that 2008 Australian Open champion Maria Sharapova is expected to participate in May’s tournament.
The 21-year-old Russian will play the Qatar Telecom German Open for the third time since 2004 and 2005.
The currently 5th-ranked woman in the world is still undefeated on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour in 2008. She became the Australian Open champion in superior style without conceding a single set.
Although she has contested the Qatar Telecom German Open twice before, Sharapova is still missing the title at Steffi Graf Stadium from her impressive resume. This is a trophy her fellow Russian Nadia Petrova, who is again among the entries this year, has already won.
Since Nadia Petrova lost the 2005 final to Justine Henin, she turned the tables the following year and beat the Belgian.
Three-time Berlin champion Justine Henin (2002, 2003, 2005) will again play in the 2008 Qatar Telecom German Open – as will last year’s titleholder Ana Ivanovic.
