Five Former Champions Headed for Amelia Island

Newly committed 2006 champion Nadia Petrova will join former champions Tatiana Golovin (2007), Lindsay Davenport (’05, ’04, 1997), Elena Dementieva (2003) and Venus Williams (2002) as they face off for the 2008 Bausch & Lomb Championships title.
With five former champions set in a draw with incredible talent, this year’s tournament is expected to give fans a week long look at contentious match-ups.
For the best professional women’s tennis in North Florida, fans should mark their calendar for April 7 – 13 as the 29th annual Bausch & Lomb Championships returns to Amelia Island Plantation.
In addition to Nadia Petrova, Patty Schnyder, Dinara Safina, Angnes Szavay, Sybille Bammer, Vera Zvonareva and Lucie Safarova have all joined the field that boasts top players, players on the rise and fan favorites.
“This year’s field will provide tennis fans with exceptional tennis throughout the week. The depth and international scope of our field is impressive and will provide fans with the level of great tennis they expect from the Bausch & Lomb Championships,” stated tournament director John Arrix.
As the 2006 champion, Nadia Petrova enters the Bausch & Lomb Championships for her ninth straight year. In 2007, Petrova saw a breakthrough season, highlighted by the clenching of her seventh singles title which came at Paris.
The Bausch & Lomb Championships 2008 singles field is gleaming with Sony Ericsson WTA Tour stars.
Along with the five former champions; Golovin, Petrova, Davenport, Dementieva and Venus Williams the tournament will feature standout and No. 6 Anna Chakvetadze, No. 10 in the world Marion Bartoli and No. 14 Nicole Vaidisova.
