Shoulder Injury Forces Maria Sharapova Out of Miami

Maria Sharapova has decided to withdraw from next week’s Sony Ericsson Open, tournament officials announced on Saturday.

The reigning Australian Open champion is suffering from a shoulder injury.

“We certainly wish Maria a speedy recovery and hope she is able to return to the court quickly,” said Tournament Director Adam Barrett.

“I know our fans will miss watching her on the court but I know she still plans on coming to Miami so they will still have the opportunity to see her on site and around town.”

The 2008 Sony Ericsson Open player field is once again loaded with talent offering guests the opportunity to see tennis played at its highest level.

Defending women’s champion Serena Williams will have to battle the likes of World No. 1 Justine Henin, American Venus Williams (1998, 1998, 2001 champion), Serbians Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic as well as 2006 Champion Svetlana Kuznetsova.
