Serena Plays Nadal . . . On Water

As the only active player to accomplish the career Grand Slam, Serena Williams is comfortable playing on a variety of tennis surfaces.

But on Tuesday Williams stepped away from traditional hard, grass, and clay courts to take part in the world’s first game of tennis on water.

Standing on top of a 110 foot swimming pool at the new Gansevoort South Hotel’s exclusive 22,000 square foot rooftop retreat, Serena enjoyed a friendly hit with ATP star Rafael Nadal.

It took an underwater construction crew seven days to build two invisible platforms at either end of the pool using a combination of acrylic sheets and tubes.

Dapxin - Marija at Women’s Tennis Blog has posted a clip of the video. It looks pretty cool, but I can’t help wondering how slippery the surface was for Rafa and Serena. You can tell they were just standing in one spot and hitting.

The last thing Serena needed before Miami was a tweaked ankle, or worse, knee.

Sorry, but I don’t have the foggiest clue about the acrylic sheets! Anyone else know?
