No Williams Sisters for Fed Cup, Says Lindsay Davenport

The weight of the Star-Spangled Banner will be firmly across the shoulders of Lindsay Davenport next month as Team USA heads to Russia for the semifinals of the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas.

According to Davenport, Venus and Serena Williams have both opted out of traveling to Moscow for the Fed Cup tie.

“I saw Venus in Memphis, and she said that she wasn’t going,” said Davenport from the Sony Ericsson Open.

“I actually haven’t seen Serena until here. It was really brief as she was walking to go play. I said, Hey, are you going? And she’s like, nope.”

Fed Cup captain Zina Garrison will have her work cut out for her against the Russian squad, which could include Top 10 players Maria Sharapova, Svetlana Kuznetsova, or Anna Chakvetadze.

Davenport also said that she has spoken with Ashley Harkleroad, who did confirm that she plans to make the trip to Moscow.

Harkleroad skyrocketed onto the public radar by winning both her singles matches in the opening round of Fed Cup after Lindsay Davenport was upset in the opening match by Sabine Lisicki.
