Charleston’s Green Clay Beckons to Maria Sharapova

True to her word, Maria Sharapova has decided to enter one of America’s green clay court events before heading to Europe.

Sharapova hinted last week that if her shoulder recovered in time, she would consider competing at Amelia Island or Charleston.

“If I’m ready, and if I’ve had a good week or nine days of practice, then I would definitely consider taking those wildcards,” said Sharapova while doing obligatory press at the Sony Ericsson Open.

Sharapova pulled out of the tournament after injuring her right shoulder at March’s Pacific Life Open.

On Tuesday the 2008 Australian Open champion announced that she will open her clay court season at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, South Carolina.

“After getting some much needed rest for both my shoulder and my body, I now feel in great shape both mentally and physically to get back on the court,” stated Sharapova.

“The Family Circle Cup has such a solid reputation on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, and I’m excited to start my clay court season in Charleston.”

Charleston was already expecting a stellar player field, but now with Sharapova’s inclusion, seven of the Top 10 players have entered the tournament.

“Maria Sharapova is one of the most exciting and talented players on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, and her addition to our 35th Anniversary Celebration makes this year’s event one of the best ever,” said Robin Reynolds, Family Circle Cup Tournament Director.

“With Maria’s entry today, our player field now boasts 7 of the Top 10 players in the world.”
