Venus Williams has followed up her decision to withdraw from this week’s Bausch & Lomb Championships by also pulling out of the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, South Carolina.
The official reason for her withdrawal is illness, although Williams has refused to elaborate about its nature.
“I regret that I will not be participating in the Family Circle Cup next week. I always enjoy coming to Charleston, especially since I’ve won the tournament in the past and this year marks their special 35th Anniversary,” said Williams in a statement released by the tournament on Wednesday.
“I wish the tournament my best and look forward to returning to competitive play in Rome the week of May 12.”
The Family Circle Cup, scheduled April 12th - 20th, 2008, has a strong player field including Australian Open Champion Maria Sharapova and Sony Ericsson Open Champion Serena Williams competing in this year’s historic 35th Anniversary event.
“It’s unfortunate that Venus was forced to withdraw due to illness, and we wish her a quick return to the Tour,” said Robin Reynolds, Family Circle Cup Tournament Director.
“Venus was scheduled to play during our 35th Anniversary Kick-Off Celebration on Tuesday night, and we will announce another marquis name from our player field in her place very soon.”

do you think this has anything to do with the post-us open anemia issue? i really hope its nothing serious and shes back to winning ways soon.

I think it has something to do with the fact that she is anemic. Venus needs to put on more weight. She is way to skinny.

Venus’ weight is fine. She’s lithe.

i was a bit worried when, in her blog for the WTA website, she said she doesn’t really eat very much. she needs to get herself a nutritionalist.

Venus’s weight is not fine! Look at pictures of her in 2002 and compare them to now. She is naturaly thin, but you can tell she isn’t eating. She needs to add more weight to play competitive tennis. I wonder if she has a eating disorder? Scandalous!

Venus’ weight is totally fine! You may prefer when she is “thicker” but that’s neither here nor there. Her issue may be nutrition but that doesn’t equate with weight. And, as for playing competive tennis, she looks much the same size as when she won Wimbledon last year.
