Maria Sharapova won the first clay court title of her career on Sunday at the 2008 Bausch & Lomb Championships in Amelia Island, Florida.
Sharapova, the top seed at the Tier I tournament, defeated Dominika Cibulkova 7-6(7), 6-3.
Although this was Sharapova’s first win on clay, her win Sunday marks her nineteenth overall title on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour and her third victory of the 2008 season.
“You obviously never know how you’re going to feel and how things are going to turn out, so I feel pretty fortunate to win my first title on clay,” said Sharapova.
“I scrapped my way through those two early matches and played well in the final, and I’m leaving this tournament as the champion, which is exciting. For tennis this is a big event, so it means a lot to me to win here. It has been a really fun week. I really felt at home here.”
Bethanie Mattek and Vladimira Uhlirova won their fourth and second Tour doubles titles respectively in their first tournament as a pairing. The duo defeated Victoria Azarenka and Elena Vesnina 6-3, 6-1.
