Russia’s Vera Zvonareva will take part in one of the biggest Sony Ericsson WTA Tour finals of her career on Sunday in Charleston, South Carolina.

The ninth seed will play former world No. 1 Serena Williams in the championship match at the Family Circle Cup.

Williams, who is seeded fifth, advanced to the final on Saturday after defeating Alize Cornet 7-5, 6-3 in the semifinals. Zvonareva made it to the last round by outlasting her countrywoman Elena Dementieva 6-3, 6-7(2), 6-3.

Zvonareva is enjoying a successful 2008 season, and reached the final at the Tier I Qatar Total Open in February before losing to Maria Sharapova. She has faced Serena Williams five times in her career, but holds a losing 1-4 record against the eight-time Grand Slam champion.

Serena headed into Charleston fresh after defending her Sony Ericsson Open title and if she wins on Sunday, she will capture her third title of 2008 and thirty-first overall.

Second seeds Katarina Srebotnik and Ai Sugiyama will play Edina Gallovits and Olga Govortsova in the doubles final also on Sunday.

Vera is really making Serena work hard for this title. I for one did not expect it to be this close in the third.
