Dinara Safina Keeps Berlin Momentum, Downs Serena

Russia’s Dinara Safina followed up her momentous victory against Justine Henin yesterday by defeating Serena Williams today in Berlin.

Safina, who previously had not scored two back-to-back Top 10 wins since May 2006, ousted Serena in three sets 2-6, 6-1, 7-6(5).

At Rome in 2006, Safina beat No. 2 Kim Clijsters, No. 8 Svetlana Kuznetsova, and No. 10 Elena Dementieva in succession before losing in the final to Martina Hingis.

    Hurray for Dinara!

    She’s been playing amazing tennis this week. Now is her time to shine even further. I hope she clinch the Title, too!

    @gooberz,

    when you send out Justine + Serena out of a tourney…you really have to go all the way & win …:)

    Happy for her and cheering all the way.

    Safina is unplayable this week in Berlin. Justine should be so hard on herself, this Safina is not the same person that has appeared on court before. The third set tiebreaker with Serena was the best set of tennis I’ve seen all year. Brilliant stuff. Questions should be directed to the Serbians rather than Serena or Justine’s form. The Serbians have yet to reach or play on this level in 2008, and they are suppose to. Serena and Maria are playing up to their usual standards this year, Justine has shifted down from her standards, and understandbly normal after the benchmarks reached. But the Serbians have yet to hit Safina’s level this year despite all the chest beating of winning a grand slam or being the new #1.
