Maria Sharapova officially became the No. 1 tennis player in the world on Monday after Justine Henin was removed from the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour rankings.
Henin’s retirement also boosted France’s Marion Bartoli back into the Top 10.
Although Jelena Jankovic won Rome on Sunday, she only advanced from No. 4 to No. 3 by virtue of Henin’s retirement as she was the 2007 defending champion in Rome. Alize Cornet’s finalist finish boosted her to a new career high at No. 20.
