Lindsay Davenport’s Wimbledon plans were dealt a major blow on Tuesday when the former world number one pulled out of the International Women’s Open.
Davenport was scheduled to play her first round match today in Eastbourne, but withdrew at the last minute because of a knee injury.
It was a hard break for the 1999 Wimbledon champion, yet Davenport believes that she will still be able to compete in next week’s major event.
“I am very disappointed to be unable to compete here but I unfortunately injured my right knee in practice over the weekend and was unable to recover in time for today’s match,” said Davenport in a statement released by the Eastbourne tournament organizers.
“I look forward to it getting better and resting and, of course, being able to play next week at Wimbledon.”
The knee injury could not have come at a worst time for Davenport, who is only days away from competing at one of her best Grand Slams.
The Beijing Olympic Games, one of the biggest motivations behind Davenport’s comeback, begin in fifty-one days.
