Ivanovic is assured of holding onto the top spot because of the early losses of Maria Sharapova, Jelena Jankovic, and Svetlana Kuznetsova at the Championships.

The battle for No. 1 has been close since Justine Henin’s retirement and subsequent removal from the computer rankings. Although Ivanovic lost in the third round at Wimbledon, she holds a large enough point lead to remain No. 1.

Jelena Jankovic is projected to rise back to No. 2 behind Ivanovic, while Maria Sharapova will fall to No. 3, or potentially No. 4 if Elena Dementieva wins the title.
