Amelie Mauresmo Withdraws from Beijing Olympics

Former world number one Amelie Mauresmo has withdrawn from the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

Because she was not selected to play singles, Mauresmo has decided to skip the event so she can prepare for the US Open.

“Because I was not picked to play in the singles and because I need to protect myself from injury, I have decided not to take part in the Olympics to concentrate on getting ready for the US Open,” said Mauresmo in a statement first published on her official website.

The French Tennis Federation selected Mary Pierce, Alize Cornet, Tatiana Golovin and Virginie Razzano for the singles event, while Mauresmo was only included in doubles.

“I will travel on August 10 to play two warm-up tournaments in Cincinnati and New Haven,” added Mauresmo. “It is with sadness that I make this decision because to play for my country at an Olympic Games would be close to my heart.”

Understandable. I didn’t get the reasoning behind leaving her off the singles roster.
