Knee Injury Halts Lindsay Davenport’s Olympic Comeback Dream

American Lindsay Davenport’s comeback dream of winning a second Olympic gold medal in singles has ended.

The 1996 Atlanta champion has withdrawn from the Beijing Olympic’s singles competition, but still hopes to play doubles with Liezel Huber.

“I’m fortunate to have the number one (doubles) player in the world as a doubles partner,” said Davenport to reporters in Beijing.

Davenport has been plagued with a knee injury for the past several weeks. She has not competed on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour since Wimbledon, where she pulled out in the second round.

The International Tennis Federation has not yet named Davenport’s replacement in the singles draw.
