ITF Ratifies 2009 Anti-Doping Code

The Board of Directors of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) ratified the 2009 World Anti-Doping Code on behalf of the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme at its meeting today in Beijing.

The Tennis Anti-Doping Programme is a sport-wide initiative, managed by the ITF on behalf of the Grand Slams, ATP, Sony Ericsson WTA Tour and ITF-sanctioned events including Davis Cup and Fed Cup.

The ITF Board applauded the changes in Version 3.0 of the code to allow increased flexibility of sanctions, which will allow the circumstances of a case to be taken into account to a greater extent, and the introduction of mandatory provisional suspensions, which reduces the time that players accused of doping offenses are in competition.

“Tennis as a sport is fully committed to the fight against doping,” said ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti who is also a member of the WADA Executive Committee. “The ITF Board was unanimous in its support of the 2009 World Anti-Doping Code and reaffirmed the support of our sport for the activities of the World Anti-Doping Agency.”

The 2009 World Anti-Doping Code will be fully integrated into the rules of all of tennis’s governing bodies from January 1, 2009.
