Venus and Serena Williams tumbled out of the 2008 Summer Olympics singles competition on Thursday.

Rain delayed most of the day’s action on the Olympic Green before play was finally halted early Friday morning.

Elena Dementieva, a silver medalist at the Sydney Games, knocked out Serena Williams in three sets 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

It was a surprising upset for Williams, who appeared to be in control during the early part of the match, only to lose momentum after two uncharacteristic double-faults gave Dementieva an opportunity to break serve for the second set.

Na Li scored one of the biggest wins of her career in front of her home crowd with a straight sets win over Venus Williams. The 2008 Wimbledon champion lost 7-5, 7-5.
