The 2008 US Open begins on Monday with a star-studded opening day lineup and an evening gala celebration that will showcase the biggest names in professional tennis.

Beijing gold medalist Elena Dementieva leads the women’s field on day one, as well as Jelena Jankovic, and American crowd favorite Lindsay Davenport.

The night session on Monday will feature a special tribute to the Open Era’s 40 US Open champions.

Aaress’ Picks for Monday

Lindsay Davenport (USA) [23] vs. Aleksandra Wozniak (CAN)
All eyes will be on Lindsay Davenport as she returns to the US Open for the first time since 2006. Is this her final farewell?

Much uncertainty surrounds the California native who has yet to announce her plans for after Flushing Meadows. A knee injury has kept her from singles competition since Wimbledon, and this will be a challenging first round match. Wozniak won her first Tour title only months ago in California—-at a tournament long associated with Davenport’s legacy.

Shahar Peer (ISR)[24] vs. Na Li (CHN)
Not long ago this match would have been worthy of a fourth round meeting. A lot has changed since both Peer and Li peaked in the Top 20. Na Li has endured a difficult injury, but is fresh off a spectacular performance in Beijing. She will have an opportunity to build on that momentum, especially before the Tour’s Asia indoor season begins.

Shahar Peer has a powerful groundstroke game from the baseline, yet is subject to extreme bouts of inconsistency. Confidence is also vital for a Peer victory, something that has been sadly lacking for most of 2008.

Tamira Paszek (AUT) vs. Maria Kirilenko (RUS)[22]
Chances are this match will not be shown on USA television, but if you are on the grounds, check out this potential late afternoon thriller on Court 10. Paszek considers her two-handed backhand one of her best shots, and she will look to use it often against Kirilenko.

Kirilenko has quietly risen back up the Tour rankings in 2008 and if she can continue improving, she might remind New Yorkers that her friend and countrywoman is not the only Maria playing tennis.

She Said What?

Jelena Jankovic on her fitness heading into the US Open:
“I’m feeling all right . . . I don’t have anything, any problems, any injuries. I’m trying to get back in shape, so I’m trying to train very hard and doing my best, you know, to get as fit as possible for the tournament.”
