Cara Black, Liezel Huber to Play Each Other for US Open Grand Slam Title

Co-ranked doubles number one players Cara Black and Liezel Huber headed to New York City with the goal of winning their first Grand Slam title of the season.

What they did not plan on was facing each other in the final round.

Black and Huber will compete in the mixed doubles final on Thursday at the US Open.

Black and her partner Leander Paes defeated Nadia Petrova and Jonas Bjorkman in the semifinals on Tuesday. Huber and Jamie Murray joined them in the championship round later in the day with a victory over Jill Craybas and Eric Butorac.

Because of the draw, the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour’s top doubles team could only play each other in the final, something Liezel Huber hoped would not happen.

“In the mixed doubles, Cara is partnering Leander Paes and I am playing with Jamie Murray,” wrote Huber on the team’s official website last Tuesday.

“They are both extremely great partners to have, so hopefully now we won’t be playing each other!”

Black and Huber are still active in the women’s doubles competition and will play eighth seeds Zi Yan and Jie Zheng in the quarterfinals.
