The International Tennis Federation announced on Wednesday that Turismo Madrid has become an international sponsor of Fed Cup by BNP Paribas, the ITF’s international team competition for women.
The three-year sponsorship will commence with the 2008 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Final between Spain and defending champion Russia being held this weekend at the Club de Campo in Madrid.
Turismo Madrid is the tourism arm of the region of Madrid with the aim to attract international visitors, not only to its capital city Madrid, but also the many cultural, leisure and entertainment activities within the region itself.
Turismo Madrid became an international sponsor of Davis Cup by BNP Paribas at the start of 2008, and for the next two weeks Madrid will host a festival of tennis that includes both the Fed Cup Final and the Davis Cup Semifinal between Spain and the defending champions from the United States as well as the 2009 draws for both competitions.
“This is great news for both Fed Cup by BNP Paribas and the ITF,” said ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti. “Madrid is the perfect place to launch this enhanced relationship between the ITF and Turismo Madrid as the sponsor of both of the ITF’s international team competitions, Fed Cup and Davis Cup by BNP Paribas.”
“Our already successful relationship with Davis Cup convinced us to add sponsorship of Fed Cup to our portfolio this year. The two competitions reach well over 150 nations who will be exposed to the benefits of Madrid as a professional meeting, conference or holiday destination,” said Mr. Santiago Fisas, Minister of Culture and Tourism for Madrid.
Fed Cup by BNP Paribas is the largest, annual international competition for women in sport with 89 nations competing in 2008. BNP Paribas is the title sponsor of Fed Cup by BNP Paribas since 2005 and is joined by international sponsors Rolex, BoscoSport and now Turismo Madrid as well as international partner, Wilson Sporting Goods.
