World number one Jelena Jankovic has reached the semifinal round at the 2008 Sony Ericsson Championships.

Jankovic beat 2004 US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in just under two hours on Thursday in Doha. Kuznetsova fell to a 0-2 round robin record after losing to Jankovic 7-6(6), 6-4.

Both Jankovic and Kuznetsova have one round robin match remaining, but because of her 2-0 record, Jankovic has clinched her spot in Saturday’s semifinals.

Vera Zvonareva, who also qualified for the semifinals from the White Group, will play Jankovic on Friday in a match that will determine who finishes first in their group.

Venus Williams finished her round robin campaign in the second match of the day on Thursday. The 2008 Wimbledon champion stunned her younger sister Serena Williams in three sets 5-7, 6-1, 6-0. Today was the first time in their eighteen meetings that one of the sisters has taken a set at love.

The final match of the day was won by Elena Dementieva, who ended Dinara Safina’s 2008 tennis season in straight sets with a 6-2, 6-4 win.
