The 2008 Sony Ericsson WTA Tour season officially began in January on the courts of New Zealand and Australia.

January Highlights

Justine Henin was named Player of the Year in the 2007 Baseline Awards.

Players competed for the first time on Australia’s new Plexicushion courts.

The International Tennis Federation found Martina Hingis guilty of doping. Hingis was sentenced to a two-year ban from professional tennis.

Lindsay Davenport won the first title of the season at the ASB Classic.

Maria Sharapova and Prince announced that she would debut a new line of gold tennis racquet bags at the Australian Open.

Dubai Duty Free extended its sponsorship of the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour until 2011. The Tour also debuted its tennis video on demand content.

Martina Hingis decided that she would not appeal her doping suspension.

Casey Dellacqua overtook Samantha Stosur for the No. 1 ranking in Australia.

Sesil Karatantcheva returned to professional tennis after serving a two-year suspension.

Maria Sharapova won the third Grand Slam title of her career by defeating Ana Ivanovic in the Australian Open final.

Serena Williams
and Pam Shriver participated in the 19th Annual Scripps Celebrity Super Bowl Poll.
