Former world number one Lindsay Davenport has postponed her retirement and will contest her sixteenth career season on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.
Australian Open officials have confirmed that Davenport has officially entered next month’s Grand Slam in Melbourne.
“We are really excited that she has entered,” said tournament director Craig Tiley on Thursday in comments reported by the Australian media. “She is a world class player and a great ambassador for our sport.”
Davenport won two titles in 2008 on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour, boosting her career total to fifty-five singles wins.
The 2009 Australian Open will take place at Melbourne Park from January 19 through February 1.

I can’t wait to see Lindsay in action. She has that intangible quality that I have admired for years. Congrats on making the decision to compete. I am thrilled and will be supporting you in Austrailia.
