Venus Williams won her fifth Wimbledon singles title at the 2008 Championships in June. She defeated her sister Serena Williams in the ladies final.

July Highlights

Venus Williams beat Serena Williams for the 2008 Wimbledon women’s title. The Williams sisters also won the women’s doubles title.

Jie Zheng donated her percentage of her Wimbledon prize money to earthquake relief in China.

Former Top 50 player Vasilisa Bardina won her first ITF match in over a year after returning from a knee injury.

Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Justine Henin, and Ana Ivanovic made Forbes’ highest earning female sports figures list.

Jelena Jankovic and Ana Ivanovic officially qualified for the 2008 Sony Ericsson Championships.

Maria Sharapova withdrew from the Olympics because of a shoulder injury.
