Russia swept the medal podium in the tennis competition at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.

August Highlights

Maria Sharapova withdrew from the US Open because of a shoulder injury.

Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic became the eighteenth woman in the history of women’s professional tennis to assume the No. 1 ranking.

Former Olympic gold medalist Lindsay Davenport pulled out of the Beijing Olympic singles competition.

Ana Ivanovic withdrew from the Olympics because of a thumb injury.

The Board of Directors of the International Tennis Federation ratified the 2009 World Anti-Doping Code.

Russia dominated at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Elena Dementieva won the gold medal, Dinara Safina captured silver, and Vera Zvonareva won bronze.

Cara Black and Liezel Huber qualified for the Doha Championships.

Caroline Wozniacki won the biggest title of her young career at the Pilot Pen Tennis in New Haven.
