The 2009 Sony Ericsson WTA Tour tennis season began with a bumpy start as the first match of the year had to be postponed.
Australia’s Samantha Stosur was scheduled to headline the opening match of the Brisbane International, but her opponent unexpectedly pulled out on Sunday.
Russia’s Maria Kirilenko, the seventh seed at the International tournament, withdrew due to an unspecified illness.
As the tournament has yet to begin, the draw has been altered, giving Japan’s Ai Sugiyama the seeded position vacated by Kirilenko. Sugiyama is expected to play Stosur on Sunday afternoon or Monday.
An updated copy of the main draw is available at the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour website.

Andrew, thanks for the update!
Hi Aaress!
Happy 2009, and a great one for On The Baseline!
Shame about Makiri
Last year she caught a bug and it really hit her. Her coach, Eric van Harpen when he saw her said she looked like a junior
Hope she gets over this soon
BTW What about Jelena Dokic! Ranked 177 and takes MoMo too 2 tiebreaks! Hope she can make it. She deserves it.
Cheers
Jim
Hi Jim,
Thanks! Happy New Year to you too!
Even though she lost, yesterday was a great start for Jelena. The road has not been easy getting to this point, but it looks as though she might be really back on the comeback trail.
