Venus Williams will have to wait yet another year to add an Australian Open trophy to her Grand Slam collection.
The five-time Wimbledon and two-time US Open champion was upset in the second round of the Australian Open on Thursday by Carla Suarez Navarro.
The Spaniard defeated the sixth seed in three sets 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 on Rod Laver Arena.
“I think she played some really good tennis,” said Venus Williams after the match about her opponent. “She was super consistent and aggressive and just went for her shots. I think she just played really well.”
Suarez Navarro will face her countrywoman Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez in the third round.
