I have the tennis channel on Direct TV; however, it is turning out to be a big waste of money. A major WTA/ATP tournament is going on this week in Indian Wells; however, the Tennis Channel only televised the first couple of rounds the first weekend but are not televising the matches throughout the week and appear ‘not’ to be televising the semi finals and finals this upcoming weekend.
FSN – Fox Sports Network (a channel I don’t subscribe to) has been televising the tournament. The Tennis Channel is showing Pepsi Challenge Matches from the 1970′s – something I would assume few people are interested in given the choice of viewing the Indian Wells tournament.
What is the problem with The Tennis Channel? Can they not afford to televise these tournaments? Should I cancel The Tennis Channel and subscribe to FSN instead? I would gladly leave Tennis Channel for more complete coverage of tournaments throughout the year. Segments like Destination Tennis and the groan-producing “Murphy’s Guide…’ just don’t cut it compared to CURRENT tournament coverage.
As an avid tennis player and fan, I am very frustrated and looking for some guidance regarding television tennis coverage.
Sincerely,
Tim Ball

I AGREE WITH TIM FROM DC…IF SEE LEIGHTON HEWITT’S BLURB ONE MORE TIME I WILL HURT SOMEONE….ITS AGES OLD AND TOTALLY UNINTERESTING TO ME…ON THE FLIP SIDE,I LIKE MURPHY’S GUIDE SHOWS…THEY SHOW PLACES I MOSTLY HAVEN’T VISITED,OR HAVENT SEEN IN A VERY LONG TIME….I KINDA THINK THE TENNIS CHANNEL,LIKE A LOT OF OTHER BUSINESSES ARE HURTING FOR MONEY AND COULD NOT AFFORD TO PAY WHAT IT WOULD HAVE COST TO CARRY THE INDIAN WELLS TOURNAMENT…UNFORTUANTELY,OF ALL THE TENNIS MATCHES TO PULL OUT OF THE VAULT,THEY PICKED THE PEPSI CHALLENGE FROM THE 70′S? IF IT WEREN’T SO PATHETIC IT WOULD BE LAUGHABLE…
Hi Tim,
Thanks for your comment. Although I’m here at Indian Wells, I do understand your frustration as even here in California the broadcast times have been poor. Every time I’ve gone back early to my hotel, I’ve not been able to find tennis on television.
As for a recommendation, I would suggest sticking with the Tennis Channel for right now. FSN normally only airs two tournaments, Indian Wells and Miami. Will your DirectTV allow you to subscribe monthly? If so, it might be worth one month’s investment to upgrade your plan to FSN. That is what I’ve done in the past just to watch these two events.
Another option is to watch the matches online through TennisTV if you have highspeed internet service.
I hope you are able to work something out and enjoy the matches from Indian Wells and Miami.
I spoke to a Tennis Channel rep who told me that Fox Channel had outbid them and ESPN for broadcasting rights to the year’s tennis maches, excepting the grand slams. I subscribed to the DirectTV sports package so I could watch all the matches – only to find out that Fox/Comcast’s programmers have their brains someplace besides providing superior coverage. I have 20 channels on which Indian Wells was carried – and NEVER SAW 1 SINGLE MATCH OF RAPHAEL NADAL!! Who is only #1 in the world. Fox doesn’t seem to know how to put in a split screen channel showing all matches scheduled at the same time so you can choose your match. They also have shown NO TENNIS DOUBLE matches.
The broadcasters don’t even seem to know what matches are actually going to be shown and are careful not to say “and next up is”. They do parrot the schedule as given by Fox, which turns out not to be correct in most cases. They don’t flip back and forth between the top seeded matches playing at the same time, but hang in with boring ones like the Safina match (and other bad women’s matches) instead of showing the men’s seeded matches.
Talk about disgusting.
Maybe someone on Foxes’ staff doesn’t like Raphael Nadal and that’s why they’re not showing his matches. The other night when the women’s match + Roddick’s match ran over and forced Nadal to play beginning around midnight, nothing was even mentioned about his match not going to be broadcast. The Tennis Channel or ESNP would have continued to boadcast the entire lineup, so that fans would not be devastated. And if there were broadcasting issues, either of them would have announced it during their TV coverage of other matches.
I can’t believe Fox has a year’s contact and we’re going to have to deal with their inaptitude. They have no idea of how to do tennis broadcasting and don’t seem to be smart enough to look into how The Tennis Channel and ESPN have done their coverage. If Fox is wealthy enough to outbid the other sports networks, they’ve enough $$$ to allocate the time to broacast all the matches.
It’s also my understanding that the ATP Association is the entity who awards the TV rights to the broadcasting companies. Brother, did they ***** up! If providing good overall coverage of the top tournaments and drawing more people into tennis – making them diehard fans like football and basketball fans is ATPs goal, they’ve failed miserably. Again, sad!
I agree with Janet. The FSN broadcasting has been awful. And to top it off, they’re not even broadcasting the men’s semis or men’s doubles finals. Imagine if they didn’t broadcast NCAA basketball final 4. There would be a riot. I certainly hope ATP does not award FSN future contracts.
The trouble with FSN in Maine is that they will broadcast the (big deal) Celtics’ games instead of tennis.
Come on. Those guys will play and play and play, but there is only ONE Indian Wells per year.
I have been trying to watch Indian Wells from Jupiter, FL. and yesterday the day match was not on, and today, with both men’s semi-finals being played, Fox had old baseball from the 60′s on, poker and old sports talk shows! I can’t belive they are not showing any of the tennis. Tomorrow is both the men’s and women’s final and I wonder if any of it will be covered. Why did they buy the rights if they didn’t want to show it?
I am very frustrated!
I am have FSN and they have decided not to air the finals today . Why are they given the broadcasting rights if they obviously have no commitment to tennis. I also have the Tennis Channel and am frustrated that they are not airing this tournament. It was the same mess last year.
I watched the finals today on Comcast Sports Net.
Broadcasting for this tournament was simply a mess. Hopefully they’ll get it right next year.
I was really saddened that the Murray v. Nadal match didn’t get aired. That was so frustrating. I kept checking everywhere. I would have rather seen this match rather than the womens match. This was very cruel. You would’ve thought the Tennis Channel would’ve aired this. Two channel disappointments, what a way to ruin a day!
FSN did air the nadal vs murray match at indian wells. I watched it, but I have comcast and i am in florida. I don’t know if that makes a difference. The TV menu was however deceiving. It said from 4-7 which obviously isn’t enough time for both womens and mens singles. but right after the womens match they played nadal and murray even tho the guide said poker was suppose to be on.
I live in Cincinnati, Ohio and have Time Warner Cable. FSN did broadcast the Women’s final but decided not to show the Men’s match which was very frustrating. Why in the world would they show the tournament through the week and not show the men’s final? Right after the women’s match they immediately went to “regular” programming. I set aside my afternoon hoping to see 2 good matches…oh well, at least I saw one :)
