Sharapova, who has not played singles tennis in eight months, has pulled out of the upcoming clay court tournaments in Rome and Madrid.

USTA To Host Roland Garros Wild Card Playoff Tournament

The United States Tennis Association will host a playoff this week to award a women’s singles main draw wild card to the 2009 French Open.

The USTA and the French Tennis Federation have a reciprocal agreement in which wild card entries into the main draw are exchanged.

Because of Fed Cup, no WTA points were dropped from this week’s rankings.

Time for Venus and Serena to Prove They are America’s Best

Although the Fed Cup final is months away, USA team captain Mary Joe Fernandez has said that she plans to ask her old WTA Tour mates Venus and Serena Williams to compete.

Should this even be an option given their apparent lack of interest? Is Fernandez planning to call in the cavalry after the foot soldiers have proven that they can win the battle?
