World number one Dinara Safina continued her amazing run at the 2009 French Open by beating Victoria Azarenka in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Newcomer Dominika Cibulkova is also through to her first major semifinal after an impressive victory over Maria Sharapova.
Safina headed into today’s quarterfinal with the loss of just five games. However, she faced a stiff early challenge from Victoria Azarenka who raced to a 6-1 lead in the match. Undaunted, Safina kept her cool—unlike Azarenka—and stormed back to win the final two sets 6-2, 6-4.
“I had a lot of chances,” Azarenka said after the match. “But she definitely stepped it up and played some good points on the key moments, which I have to give her all the credit.”
Maria Sharapova saved some of the best tennis of her comeback for late in the second set of her quarterfinal against Dominika Cibulkova.
When pressed with the embarrassment of a double-bagel, Maria delivered two amazing games to break and hold serve for 5-2. But in the end, it was too late as Dominika Cibulkova finally closed out the cliffhanger in straight sets 6-0, 6-2.
Safina and Cibulkova will meet in the semifinal round on Thursday.

But anyway, Vika played very very well.
