Sadly, I can neither watch the US Open from my living-room couch (it’s not free to air in Britain), nor go to New York (because of my job: I already demand an excessive amount of leave to watch tennis). I can’t even order US Open matches on DVD any more, because the USTA has forbidden it.
So I don’t get to watch a single point from the US Open. :-(
Wow, Andrew, that’s terrible! I didn’t know that coverage wasn’t available for free over there. Our options in the USA aren’t the greatest for tennis, but at least 3 of the 4 major finals are broadcast for free on network channels.
At least the other three Majors are televised by the BBC.
From the Australian Open, only the night-sessions are televised, which means the BBC’s coverage is very male-dominated – a woman can get to the semi-finals and not be televised by the BBC that year.
The French Open is much better, as the BBC covers the whole day, albeit only on a single channel. It’s much fairer to fans of women’s tennis.
Wimbledon is tennis-heaven, as it’s on three or four Freeview-channels simultaneously throughout the day! :)
But for the US Open, we’re limited to photos, reports, and live scores on the Internet. :(
And the BBC lost the rights to Eastbourne this year, meaning that no women’s tennis is televised outside of the Majors and the Olympics. :(
