Reigning Olympic gold medalist Elena Dementieva captured her third title of the 2009 Sony Ericsson WTA Tour season on Sunday at the Rogers Cup in Toronto, Canada.

Elena DementievaDementieva, the fourth seed at the tournament, beat her countrywoman Maria Sharapova in the championship match.

It was a stellar performance by Dementieva, who cruised to a 6-4, 6-3 victory in just over two hours.

“I just feel I played a huge day. I was fighting for every point, so many long rallies,” Dementieva said afterward.

“It was not the way I like to play – it was a more defensive game today – but against her, it’s very hard to be aggressive because she puts a lot of pressure on the first two shots, so you need to work on defense before you have your chances to go for your shots.”

Also on Sunday, Nuria Llagostera Vives and María José Martínez Sánchez won their fifth Tour title of the year together (and sixth overall), rallying from 6-2, 3-0 down and saving a match point down 9-8 in the match tie-break to beat Samantha Stosur and Rennae Stubbs.

With Dementieva’s victory, she jumps into first place on the 2009 US Open Series Race standings.

There was a lot of win (Elena’s hat almost blew off and you could clearly see the ball move off its trajectory before Maria hit it) which may have led to some of the double faults, both women fought. It was a great match, both women fighting for each point. Neither were giving up. So kudos to you Elena and to Maria, the fight all week shows that you will be up in the rankings soon.

I am so “turned off” by the screaming that these two women do, that I cannot listen – I have to mute them (or not watch at all). It is a shame that it is still “okay” for these superior players to make it so unpleasant for viewers. There should be a rule that they cannot make so much noise!
