Kim Clijsters’ inspirational comeback run at the 2009 US Open is over.
And it couldn’t have had a sweeter ending for the most famous mother in tennis.
The former world number one and newly unretired Belgian has added a second Grand Slam to her impressive resume. Four years after winning her first major, Clijsters has won her second US Open title.
Clijsters overcame a tentative start against ninth seed Caroline Wozniacki, but still prevailed in straight sets 7-5, 6-3 in her first Grand Slam after spending two years in retirement.
“I can’t believe this happened,” Clijsters said. “Because it still seems so surreal that in my third tournament back [I] won my second Grand Slam.”
“Because it wasn’t in the plan, kind of. I just wanted to come here and get a feel for it all over again, play a Grand Slam so to start the next year I didn’t have to go through all the new experiences over.”
She is the first mother to win a Grand Slam singles title since Evonne Goolagong Cawley, who won the 1980 Wimbledon title.

I am a “forever” tennis fan! Have been to the US Open several times in the ’90′s. I am 80 years old, played tennis myself, in later years not competatively, but “fun” doubles until this year. I was thrilled that Kim won the US Open, not only because she is a superior tennis player but “silent” on the courts. It is nice to be able to watch a match, without having to “mute”, not only the sounds of the players, but also the commentators!
