Amelie Mauresmo ended her 2009 Sony Ericsson WTA Tour season prematurely on Thursday, quietly admitting for the first time that her desire to compete is gone.
The thirty-year-old French veteran is one of the few remaining finesse players at the top of the women’s game.
Mauresmo announced the news that she was pulling out of Linz and Luxembourg today in a message on her official website.
“Since I came back from the U.S. Open, I’ve been trying to practice but I can’t find again the desire to come back to competition,” Mauresmo said.
“I don’t want to rush or force things. (I will take) time to think before making a decision regarding the remainder of my career.”
Mauresmo’s last few seasons have not been nearly as successful as her blockbuster year in 2006. Three years ago, Mauresmo finally lifted her first major title at the Australian Open, and followed it six months later with the singles title at Wimbledon.
