Mixed doubles will make a grand debut at the 2012 Olympics in London.

The International Tennis Federation announced on Thursday that the International Olympic Committee has approved the inclusion of mixed doubles into the tennis event.

“The ITF is very happy and grateful that the IOC Executive Board has decided to add mixed doubles to the programme for the Olympic Tennis Event for London 2012 and beyond,” said ITF President Francesco Ricci Bitti in a statement.

“We believe that this addition will make Olympic Tennis a truly unique event, with top players having the opportunity to compete for their countries and the honour of an Olympic Medal in three distinct disciplines: singles, doubles and mixed doubles. The ITF thanks the IOC Executive Board for their continuing support of tennis in the Olympic Games.”

Tennis at the next summer games will be held at the prestigious All-England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club at Wimbledon.
