Kim Clijsters Beats Justine Henin to Win 2010 Brisbane International

Published by Aaress Lawless on Jan 9, 2010 | Print |

Kim Clijsters captured her thirty-sixth career title and second since coming out of retirement last season at the Brisbane International.

Kim Clijsters defeated her long-time rival Justine Henin on Saturday to clinch the 2010 Brisbane International women’s singles title.

Henin’s run to the final at her comeback event capped off a memorable opening week of tennis in Australia.

Prior to today’s final, Clijsters and Henin had met twenty-two times with Justine leading their head-to-head 12-10. On Saturday, she nearly scored a major upset over the 2009 US Open champion, but lost the epic three-set encounter to Clijsters 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(6).

Clijsters managed to save two match points before closing out the two-hour, 24-minute match. This was her thirty-sixth career title and second since coming out of retirement last season.

Justine is already a winner reaching the Finals on her comeback tournament. She just showed she is still a player to beat. She almost won it but she let it slipped away. She still has to polish the serve if she expects better results in the AO.

Kim has to be praised for donating her prize money to the children’s hospital. Big kudos!

    To Whom It May Concern,
You have said “read the full story and join the discussion,” but I do not feel the above published is a full story. I watched that match, so I knew everything that went on the court and what you gave was only scores, time, etc. Suppose, if I had not watched that match, then how could this article have made me know about Justin’s GREAT comeback from 1-4 and a set down to two match points? I want you to NARRATE the match. OR
don’t mention as “full story.” AND
    that match was a TREAT

I agree, Krisha. But having read many articles on various website I have an impression there is a sad trend for giving only a few players a lot of credit nevermind their performance and conversely, other players do receive only a scant appraisal even though they played on a high level.
I watched most of grand slam matches last season and not one was so thrilling and full of twists and turns as this one. As Kim said they set the bar pretty high.
