INDIAN WELLS, California—Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik capped off a memorable week of doubles tennis in Indian Wells with the 2010 BNP Paribas Open women’s title.
The unseeded team beat third seeds Nadia Petrova and Samantha Stosur in a super tiebreak 6-4, 2-6, 10-5 (TB) on Saturday evening in California.
Playing in just their fifth tournament as a team, Peschke and Srebotnik were able to take their recent finalist finish in Dubai a step further by capturing their first title together.
“I think we are very happy, and couldn’t work better for us, these two weeks,” Peschke said after the match. “We enjoyed it here so much, and it’s such a great place to be. Even put the win on the top of it all, it’s great feeling.”
For each of them, the victory had an extra special sweetness as they are both rebuilding their rankings after being sidelined for a significant part of 2009 because of injuries.
Both sets started with Petrova and Stosur racing to an early lead, but although they dropped the second set, Peschke and Srebotnik battled back to win in the super tiebreak.
“We did not start so well,” Srebotnik said. “Our opponents started pretty strong. “But I’m really happy how we found a way to somehow get the first set and then to win that tiebreak.”
“So on the crucial points we played really well. And I’m really, really pleased with today.”
Although Peschke has plans to celebrate tonight, Srebotnik will have to save her celebration for another day.
“I have a flight tomorrow morning from LA, and I play on Tuesday probably singles in Miami already, and it’s like a three hour time difference,” Srebotnik said.
“But I’m happy to be so late here. It’s a very good problem to have. I will just enjoy Miami and of course try to enjoy this win, as well.”

A news site referred to Polona Hercog as the leading Slovenian player, so maybe Srebotnik can start to contradict that perception.
That’s definitely interesting, Alice. I think Katarina’s game’s back on the upswing, so hopefully her foot has healed completely.
Great win for an unseeded team on the rise!
