Something that hasn’t (to my knowledge) been discussed is the WTA doubles draw, and more specifically the Williams sisters. Now, it’s exciting for them to play a non-Grand Slam, but I think they also smell blood regarding Huber/Black not playing together currently. This time last year Huber/Black won Madrid (1000 points) and were semifinalists at the French. The Williams sisters did not play Madrid last year, and lost in round three of Paris.
I did the math and with Black losing first round doubles and Huber losing second round, their points stand respectively at 8020 and 8320 for next week’s rankings. The Williams are at 7690, including their quarterfinalist points should they lose their next match. However, if they go on to win the whole thing, they’ll have 8440, enough to take over the number one doubles ranking, and putting Serena in the rare category of no. 1 in singles and doubles simultaneously. And even if they don’t make it all the way in Madrid, they have less to defend at the French and are looking good to be no. 1′s by Wimbledon.
