Former world number one Justine Henin announced on Thursday her surprising decision to withdraw from not only the upcoming Best of Belgium exhibition with Kim Clijsters, but also the US Open.

Henin suffered a fall during her round of sixteen match with Clijsters. Upon further examinations, it was discovered that the former US Open champion had partially fractured a ligament in her right elbow.

“I regret to announce [to] you that I can’t unfortunately play in Best of Belgium this July 8th,” Henin said in a message on her official website.

“This injury will keep me away from the courts during a rough period of 2 months with the consequence the withdrawal of my US round [including the] US Open. In 4 weeks, I’ll take complementary medical examinations that will give me certainty about the end of the season.”

The Best of Belgium organizers were attempting to top the previous crowd attendance set by Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs at their famous Battle of the Sexes event. Henin will not compete, but plans to still be present at the event.

Surprising decision? What did you expect her to do? Play with her arm in a sling?
