The tournament field boasts eight of the Top 10 players on the WTA Tour, and 26 of the Top 30, including defending champion and top seed Jelena Jankovic, defending US Open champion Kim Clijsters, the 2009 US Open finalist Caroline Wozniacki and three-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova along with 2010 French Open champion Francesca Schiavone and this year’s finalists from Wimbledon, Vera Zvonareva, and the French Open, Sam Stosur.
“No question we wish Venus were able to compete this year,” said tournament director Bruce Flory. “As a Premier 5 event on the WTA Tour, our field is the strongest it’s ever been. We’re proud to be welcoming Grand Slam champions and former event champions among the deep and talented entry list for the Women’s Open. It will be a great week of tennis.”
Williams made her Cincinnati debut in 2009, reaching the third round before falling to Flavia Pennetta.
“I regret that I will not be returning to Cincinnati to compete in the Western & Southern Financial Group Women’s Open,” Williams said. “I enjoyed my time in Cincinnati last year and have been looking forward to coming back. During the last three weeks, I returned to my normal practice schedule, and last week began to experience pain in my left knee. My medical advisors and physio have recommended that I refrain from competition until I am pain free. Unfortunately, I am not at a point where I can commit to competing next week.”
The Women’s Open will begin play on August 7 with qualifying, and the main draw will start on August 9. The final will be help on August 15, which is the same day play will begin for the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament which will include returning champion Roger Federer, World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, two-time Cincinnati finalist Novak Djokovic and two-time champion Andy Roddick.
