Foot Injury Knocks Maria Sharapova Out of Montreal

Published by Aaress Lawless on Aug 16, 2010 | Print |

The Rogers Cup in Montreal, Canada received a late withdrawal on Sunday as crowd favorite Maria Sharapova withdrew because of a foot injury.

Sharapova, the finalist at the Western & Southern Financial Group Women’s Open last week, was prompted to pull out of the Premier US Open Series tournament after injuring her foot in the championship match against Kim Clijsters.

“I felt some pain in my foot late in the second set which kind of scared me so I have been forced to pull out of Montreal,” Sharapova wrote on her official website.

“I am hoping I just need a few days of rest.”

The US Open, the 2010 tennis season’s final major of the year, begins in Flushing Meadows on August 30.
