Your Call: Who Will End 2010 as the WTA Tour No. 1 Player?

Published by Aaress Lawless on Sep 27, 2010 | Print |

The 2010 WTA Tour season is rapidly winding down to a close, but one more crucial question remains unanswered. Who will end the year ranked as No. 1 in the world?

Serena Williams currently holds the top spot, but her weeks of inactivity are costing her ranking points. Serena’s absence gives both Caroline Wozniacki and Vera Zvonareva a chance to take over the number one ranking in the upcoming weeks.

Your Call: Who do you think will end the year ranked at No. 1? Leave your opinion in the comments below or send a reply on Twitter to @OnTheBaseline!

Serena will and should end the year as #1. Despite the ranking points system, which puts Wozniacki within striking distance of the top spot, Serena is still on top. The other players play more tournaments, so that gives them more points. Frequency of play is not a true measure of ability, in my opinion. She is 2-0 against Wozniacki. The oddsmakers would likely give it to Serena in any match between the two.

I am sure serena williams would and will be ranked No.1 by the end of year 2010.

I’d like to see Woz close but not quite there. It’d be better for her to kind of get it done based on a strong Slam result, when Serena is also playing, if she does it at all.

The last thing I want for Wozniacki is for her to climb to No. 1 before winning a slam. For two reasons: 1. The media will harp on it to no end, and 2. She’ll be better off staying hungry and humble rather than taking the top spot based on the prolonged absence of Serena.

At this time of year, the Race to the Sony Ericsson Championships gives a clearer indication of the year-end #1 than the Rankings, since the players have personalised ranking-points to defend between now and the end of the season, whereas they all started the Race at 0 in January.

Caroline Wozniacki is currently #1 in the Race, and her consistency makes it extremely likely that she will overtake the injured Serena Williams in the Rankings, since Williams is defending champion of the Sony Ericsson Championships, while Wozniacki has only a couple of semi-finals to defend.

Positions #2–5 in the Race are very close, with Kim Clijsters, Vera Zvonarëva and Venus Williams seemingly within striking distance of the year-end #2 if not #1…

Clisters will end the year at #1. She has no points to defend for the rest of the year. Serena has to defend 1500 points for YEC, Wozniacki has 530 from YEC in addition to other points same for Zvonareva. If Clisters does well in Beijing and at YEC she should be #1 and take home the biggest chunk of change also.

Chances are bright for Caroline Wozniaki as Andrew Broad’s comments having green signal for her. Good Luck

Serena is playing Kremlin Cup and Kim is out of Bejing…I think Serena is going for it and she will be fresh for the YEC…Serena likes Being #1 in the World…What Serena wants, Serena works very hard for!!!!!!!!!!!! Serena Williams Year End #1!!!!
