Venus Williams Out for Rest of 2010, No WTA Championships or Fed Cup

Venus Williams has ended her 2010 Sony Ericsson WTA Tour season prematurely because of a lingering left knee injury.

Williams, who previously committed to play in the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas final against Italy next month, announced today that she has decided to scrap any further competition plans for this year, including Fed Cup and the season-ending Sony Ericsson Championships.

“I have been getting treatment and therapy on my knee and have been making progress, but unfortunately must continue to keep weight off my knee for the short term and won’t be ready to return to competition in 2010,” Williams said in a statement released to the Associated Press.

“I am looking forward to returning to full health in time for the start of 2011 season and hopefully having the opportunity to play in both the Fed Cup and WTA Championships next year.”

Venus has been absent from the WTA Tour since losing in the semifinals of the US Open to eventual champion Kim Clijsters. She was recently spotted over the weekend at a Los Angeles mall using crutches.
