Kim Clijsters Beats Caroline Wozniacki to Win Sony Ericsson Championships Title

Published by Aaress Lawless on Oct 31, 2010 | Print |

Reigning US Open champion Kim Clijsters capped off her memorable 2010 tennis season on Sunday with a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 victory over world number one Caroline Wozniacki.

“At the moment I’m kind of relieved it’s over,” Clijsters said after her hard-fought win. “It seemed like it would never end. It was a tough battle. We showed some great tennis and some great fitness – I think we showed the crowd some great women’s tennis tonight.”

Clijsters becomes the fifth player in WTA history to win this event three or more times, after Martina Navratilova (eight times), Steffi Graf (five), Chris Evert (four) and Monica Seles (three).

Gisela Dulko and Flavia Pennetta win their first WTA Championships title, beating Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik 7-5, 6-4.

Well done to Kim. The best player won the title. I think Caroline’s true position is probably about 3rd best player behind Kim and Serena.
